Romania’s Black Sea coast has a food culture that most visitors never discover. Here are seven dishes to seek out in Costinești.
From the sea
- Black Sea turbot (calcan) — a flatfish grilled whole, simply seasoned. The Black Sea version is considered the best in Romania.
- Stuffed peppers with fish — a coastal twist on the Romanian classic, using locally caught white fish.
- Midii cu usturoi — Black Sea mussels in garlic and white wine. Cheap, generous, and everywhere in Costinești.
From the land
- Mici — skinless grilled sausages, the default Romanian street food. Best eaten with mustard and cold beer.
- Saramură de crap — carp in a salty brine with polenta, a Danube Delta dish that has made its way to the coast.
- Ciorbă de pește — sour fish soup with vegetables, perfect after a morning swim.
- Plăcintă — sweet or savoury pie, the perfect beach snack from any bakery in town.
